The Reality of Permanent Hair Removal Cream Products

Permanent hair removal cream is an extremely popular product in today’s world of beautification. Some manufacturers make outrageous claims while others are giving you the honest facts. But how do these products actually work?

The bottom line is that they work by dissolving the hair at the skin’s surface. They do not affect the root. And therein lies the problem! Because the creams don’t enter or alter the hair follicle in any way, eventually, the targeted hair will grow back.

The Reality of “Permanent” Hair Removal Creams

Something that should be noted is that few, if any, facial creams promise permanent hair removal. These products are effective only on a shorter term basis and will require re-application as the hair returns. The facial hair removal products that claim a permanent solution should be viewed as highly suspect, and should be discussed with your dermatologist prior to use.

The good news is that there are effective hair removal creams that provide relief on an intermediate-term basis. These usually involve a hair inhibitor that must be applied on a regular basis and actually do retard the re-growth of the hair.

What Are Hair Inhibitors?

A prescription product such as Vaniqa, is a topical anti-androgen ointment. What this means is that it doesn’t actually remove hair, but is a hair growth inhibitor that prevents, or retards, the re-growth of the hair. It must be used in conjunction with a hair removal method, such as shaving. Unfortunately, if the application of Vaniqa is discontinued, facial hair will resume growing at its normal rate.

Some over-the-counter creams claim to offer permanent hair removal. One that comes to mind is a product called Hair No More. This product offers both a hair remover and a hair inhibitor cream. The manufacturer claims that as long as the hair inhibitor is used regularly, the hair will not grow back. Unfortunately, these claims cannot be backed up with scientific studies. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it may work for some people, with some consumers being completely happy with these products and others stating the products are worthless.

Liquid “Electrolysis”?

You may have seen the advertisements for products called “liquid electrolysis.” In a typical electrolysis treatment, a fine metal probe is inserted into a hair follicle and a small electrical charge is administered which damages the hair follicle. This actually prevents that individual hair growing back.

The liquid electrolysis products contain a caustic, and even corrosive, substance that is applied to the targeted area. Due to the active ingredients in these products, they can result in severe skin irritation. With no documented proof that this treatment is permanent, the risks may certainly outweigh the benefits.

Be Careful!

Whether you know it or not, your skin is the largest organ in the makeup of the human body. And as you know, your skin can be extremely sensitive to artificial chemicals. As these products do contain numerous chemicals as their active agents, use of a permanent hair removal cream should be combined with extreme care. If you do elect to try any of these hair removal products, try using them sparingly in an inconspicuous area to determine if your skin will react to the ingredients. Don’t be afraid to be overly cautious – it could save you a lot of pain and irritation!
