If you have unwanted hair and want to remove it permanently, there are a host of options to accomplish this task. But if you prefer to try permanent hair removal at home, your options become much more limited. It is understandable that many people might prefer to perform this task in the privacy of their own homes.

But be aware that this is a prime area for scams and fraudulent products. So, the term “Buyer Beware” should be taken very seriously when shopping for home-quality hair removal equipment.

The top home use permanent hair removal options include:

Home Electrolysis Units

This is a hair removal option that is widely advertised for in-home use. Electrolysis involves a super-thin metal probe being placed into the hair follicle, with a small electrical charge being directed at the hair follicle. This damages the hair follicle, resulting in permanent hair removal for that individual hair.

You can find home electrolysis units for about $50. The key is to choose a unit that actually involves inserting a probe into the hair follicle. Electrolysis hair removal products that eliminate this step are probably not worth the effort because results will only be temporary, at best.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, permanent hair removal at home with electrolysis can be a tricky endeavor. It is extremely time-consuming, removes only one hair at a time, and the unit will not be as effective as its commercial counterpart. And beware – a common issue with these units is that, due to your lack of experience in electrolysis, it is easy to inadvertently damage the skin.

Many of the experts on permanent hair removal at home recommend that electrolysis be left in the hands of a professional.

Oral Medications

The fact is that most medications will not produce permanent hair removal at home. The best result you can usually strive for is a permanent hair ‘reduction’ through inhibiting the growth of new hair. The majority of these medications work by reducing the amount of testosterone or androgen (the specific hormones that control hair growth) in the system.

You will need to visit a dermatologist to obtain these medications because they currently all require a prescription. Some of the more common ones include: Propecia, Aldactone, and Daine35.

Topical Ointments and Creams

A prescription medication called Vaniqa is one of the only topical hair removal medications recommended for long-term hair loss. This medication works by retarding new hair growth.

Unfortunately, it is only a hair growth inhibitor and must be combined with another hair control method such as shaving, plucking, etc. And once the product is discontinued, hair will resume growing at its normal rate. This product is only recommended for women for use on facial hair.

Be a Cautious Consumer

Because many people would prefer to find methods of permanent hair removal at home, the market is ripe for all sorts of scam artists. They will try to sell you expensive products that are either unproven or totally ineffective. So, before spending large amounts on a piece of hair removal equipment or ‘special’ lotion, check it out with your dermatologist.

The Reality of Permanent Hair Removal Cream Products

Permanent hair removal cream is an extremely popular product in today’s world of beautification. Some manufacturers make outrageous claims while others are giving you the honest facts. But how do these products actually work?

The bottom line is that they work by dissolving the hair at the skin’s surface. They do not affect the root. And therein lies the problem! Because the creams don’t enter or alter the hair follicle in any way, eventually, the targeted hair will grow back.

The Reality of “Permanent” Hair Removal Creams

Something that should be noted is that few, if any, facial creams promise permanent hair removal. These products are effective only on a shorter term basis and will require re-application as the hair returns. The facial hair removal products that claim a permanent solution should be viewed as highly suspect, and should be discussed with your dermatologist prior to use.

The good news is that there are effective hair removal creams that provide relief on an intermediate-term basis. These usually involve a hair inhibitor that must be applied on a regular basis and actually do retard the re-growth of the hair.

What Are Hair Inhibitors?

A prescription product such as Vaniqa, is a topical anti-androgen ointment. What this means is that it doesn’t actually remove hair, but is a hair growth inhibitor that prevents, or retards, the re-growth of the hair. It must be used in conjunction with a hair removal method, such as shaving. Unfortunately, if the application of Vaniqa is discontinued, facial hair will resume growing at its normal rate.

Some over-the-counter creams claim to offer permanent hair removal. One that comes to mind is a product called Hair No More. This product offers both a hair remover and a hair inhibitor cream. The manufacturer claims that as long as the hair inhibitor is used regularly, the hair will not grow back. Unfortunately, these claims cannot be backed up with scientific studies. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it may work for some people, with some consumers being completely happy with these products and others stating the products are worthless.

Liquid “Electrolysis”?

You may have seen the advertisements for products called “liquid electrolysis.” In a typical electrolysis treatment, a fine metal probe is inserted into a hair follicle and a small electrical charge is administered which damages the hair follicle. This actually prevents that individual hair growing back.

The liquid electrolysis products contain a caustic, and even corrosive, substance that is applied to the targeted area. Due to the active ingredients in these products, they can result in severe skin irritation. With no documented proof that this treatment is permanent, the risks may certainly outweigh the benefits.

Be Careful!

Whether you know it or not, your skin is the largest organ in the makeup of the human body. And as you know, your skin can be extremely sensitive to artificial chemicals. As these products do contain numerous chemicals as their active agents, use of a permanent hair removal cream should be combined with extreme care. If you do elect to try any of these hair removal products, try using them sparingly in an inconspicuous area to determine if your skin will react to the ingredients. Don’t be afraid to be overly cautious – it could save you a lot of pain and irritation!

The Typical Cost of Laser Hair Removal

Using a laser system to permanently remove back hair is not only efficient, but fairly cost effective. An average laser treatment cost is about $300 per session, with a larger back area costing slightly more. A back area may require 3-4 treatments, dependent on the area being treated. Considering that the hair will be permanently removed, with no need for ongoing maintenance like that experienced with shaving, waxing, threading, etc., the price is quite reasonable.

As you can see, the transition from electrolysis to laser has been a rapid one. Electrolysis was state-of-the-art in its own time. However, the arrival of the laser systems on the skin care scene has made electrolysis totally redundant, or even obsolete in some cases.
